SAP carbon accounting software and SAP Green Ledger compared for US S/4HANA and ECC finance teams

SAP sells carbon accounting as two separately licensed products. SAP Sustainability Footprint Management calculates the footprint, sold in blocks of 50,000 records with a three-block minimum and a price on request. SAP Green Ledger posts and allocates those emissions next to your financial ledger, and SAP says it does not calculate footprints itself. Both need SAP S/4HANA Cloud. US teams still on ECC, or with an SB 253 or CDP date before a migration finishes, can classify the vendor and GL line items they already export into a Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory. Try it on your own spend lines below.

This page is for a US controller, finance systems lead or sustainability manager at a company that runs SAP and now has a carbon number to produce: a parent in scope for California SB 253, a CDP response, a large customer's supplier request or an auditor asking how a Scope 3 figure was built. The natural first question is whether SAP already does it. It does, in pieces, and the pieces have prerequisites that decide whether they are an option for you this year.

Every SAP fact on this page comes from SAP's own material: the SAP Green Ledger and SAP Sustainability Footprint Management product pages, the published pricing terms for Footprint Management, SAP's general availability announcement for Green Ledger dated January 23, 2025, and the Green Ledger Q2 2026 release notes on SAP Community. All were read in October 2026.

Does SAP have carbon accounting software?

Yes, but not as one product. SAP's carbon accounting is a set of separately licensed applications that each do one job. SAP Sustainability Footprint Management calculates corporate and product footprints from ERP data. SAP Green Ledger records those emissions as carbon postings, allocates them to cost centers, profit centers, segments and projects, and reports carbon next to financials. SAP Sustainability Control Tower handles ESG reporting, and SAP Sustainability Data Exchange collects product footprints from suppliers.

SAP's own FAQ is explicit about the split: Green Ledger "does not include capabilities to calculate corporate or product carbon footprints." A company that buys Green Ledger alone has a place to book emissions but nothing that produces them.

How much does SAP Sustainability Footprint Management cost?

SAP does not publish a dollar price. What it publishes is the metric, and the metric tells you a lot. Footprint Management is "priced by blocks of 50,000 records," where a record is "each individual data object managed via the cloud service." Active footprints count toward the total and inactive ones do not. The minimum purchase is three blocks, 150,000 records. The prerequisite is "a valid SAP S/4HANA Cloud license." Contract duration and pricing are "available on request," and the subscription auto-renews. The test and demo tenant is listed as "exclusively available for partners," so a customer evaluates through an SAP partner rather than a self-serve trial.

Put plainly, the SAP-native route costs an S/4HANA Cloud subscription, a Footprint Management subscription sized in records, a Green Ledger subscription if you want carbon in the ledger, and a partner to configure the emission factor mapping and allocation models. None of those has a public number. If a partner quote is already on your desk, the useful comparison is against what a first inventory costs by other routes.

What SAP Green Ledger does and what it needs

SAP describes Green Ledger as "an app on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) that integrates with your financial accounting system running on SAP S/4HANA Cloud." SAP announced general availability on January 23, 2025, and calls the product a move "from averages to actuals." The idea is genuinely good: carbon is booked like money, as carbon collections and carbon liabilities in a journal, then allocated to the same cost centers and profit centers the controller already uses, with double-entry controls an auditor recognizes.

The product is moving quickly. SAP's Q2 2026 release notes added project allocations using WBS elements as sender and receiver, mass reversal of up to 5,000 carbon collections in one step, and made "copy financial flow" allocation models available for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, which until then had been Public Edition only. That last point tells you where the product started: on S/4HANA Cloud, not on the ECC systems many US manufacturers still run.

Two routes from SAP books to a carbon number

SAP-native route

  1. 01 S/4HANA Cloud Public or Private Edition, the prerequisite for Footprint Management and the system Green Ledger connects to
  2. 02 Footprint Management A partner maps 45,000+ factors to materials, energy and suppliers; billed in 50,000-record blocks
  3. 03 Green Ledger Carbon collections posted to the journal and allocated to cost centers, segments and WBS elements
  4. 04 Control Tower ESG metrics and disclosure output for CSRD, ISSB and similar frameworks

CarbonAccounting.ai route

  1. 01 Export from SAP Vendor and GL line items from ECC or S/4HANA, any edition, as CSV or XLSX
  2. 02 US factors per line EPA USEEIO spend factors and eGRID electricity, with the factor stored on each line
  3. 03 Review the unsure lines Every line gets a scope, one of 15 Scope 3 categories, a reason and a confidence score
  4. 04 Evidenced inventory Each tonne linked to its SAP document line, ready for SB 253, CDP or an assurance provider

SAP ECC carbon accounting before an S/4HANA migration

Both SAP carbon products are built around S/4HANA Cloud. A US company still on ECC 6.0 has no SAP-native carbon module to switch on, and SAP's mainstream maintenance for the Business Suite 7 generation ends in 2027, so most of those companies are mid-migration or planning one. Waiting for the migration to finish before producing a carbon number rarely matches the dates you are given: SB 253 Scope 1 and 2 reports are due November 10, 2026, Scope 3 starts in 2027, and customers ask on their own schedules.

The data you need already exists in ECC. The standard vendor line item report (transaction FBL1N), GL line item report (FBL3N) and purchase order lists (ME2N and its variants) export to a spreadsheet with the vendor, GL account, document text, posting date, amount and, for purchases, quantity and unit. On S/4HANA the Fiori apps for supplier and general ledger line items give the same data. That export is exactly what our classifier reads. The inventory you build from it now does not have to be thrown away later either: the line-level scope and category decisions become the mapping a future Footprint Management or Green Ledger project starts from.

From an SAP export, only the uncertain lines reach a person. The rest arrive classified, with the reason attached.

Carbon accounting for SAP S/4HANA users in the US

CarbonAccounting.ai starts from the accounts payable or GL export your SAP system already produces, whatever the edition. It proposes a GHG Protocol scope and one of the 15 Scope 3 categories for every line, writes the reason and a confidence score, and sends only the uncertain lines to a reviewer. US entities are calculated on EPA USEEIO spend factors and eGRID grid electricity factors, and the factor is stored with the line. Utility invoices and fuel purchases land in Scope 2 and Scope 1, and the Compliance plan adds activity-based factors so kilowatt-hours, therms and gallons replace dollars wherever your purchase lines carry quantities.

The design choice that matters for an SAP shop is traceability. When an assurance provider samples a Scope 3 figure, you open the line and see the SAP vendor, the document text, the category, the factor and the reviewer who approved it. That is the same audit trail Green Ledger promises, produced from an export rather than from a new platform, and it is available in days rather than after a partner project.

Where each option fits

01 On S/4HANA Cloud, product footprints

SAP Footprint Management and Green Ledger

You need product carbon footprints for thousands of materials, CBAM or Catena-X data, and carbon allocated in the ledger. SAP is built for that, and IDC placed SAP among the Leaders in its 2026 carbon accounting MarketScape.

02 On ECC or mid-migration

Compliance

An SB 253, CDP or customer date before S/4HANA is live. Export vendor and GL line items, classify, review and file, with the mapping kept for later.

03 Several entities, IT sign-off

Enterprise

Multiple company codes reported as separate entities, single sign-on and user provisioning, at a published $41,880 a year.

Is SAP Green Ledger enough for SB 253?

Not on its own, because SB 253 asks for Scope 1 and 2 emissions and Green Ledger does not calculate them; it books what another tool or process produced. For the first report due November 10, 2026, CARB accepts an existing annual report, data already reported to another program, its draft Scope 1 and 2 template, or a statement of non-reporting, and it names EPA eGRID as an acceptable Scope 2 factor source. Assurance is not enforced for the 2026 filing. The quickest compliant path for most SAP shops is therefore a Scope 1 and 2 calculation from utility and fuel lines, documented line by line. The SB 253 reporting software page and the November 10 filing walkthrough cover what CARB's intake platform asks for.

01 Does SAP have carbon accounting software?
Yes. SAP Sustainability Footprint Management calculates corporate and product footprints from ERP data, and SAP Green Ledger books and allocates those emissions next to the financial ledger. They are licensed separately, both need SAP S/4HANA Cloud, and SAP states that Green Ledger does not calculate footprints itself.
02 How much does SAP Sustainability Footprint Management cost?
SAP publishes no dollar price. Footprint Management is sold in blocks of 50,000 records, with a minimum of three blocks (150,000 records), requires a valid SAP S/4HANA Cloud license, auto-renews, and is priced on request. The demo tenant is available to SAP partners only, so evaluation runs through a partner.
03 What is SAP Green Ledger?
SAP Green Ledger is an app on SAP Business Technology Platform that integrates with SAP S/4HANA Cloud and records carbon emissions as postings in a journal, allocated to cost centers, profit centers, segments and projects. SAP announced general availability on January 23, 2025. It allocates and reports emissions but does not calculate them.
04 Does SAP Green Ledger work with SAP ECC?
SAP describes Green Ledger as integrating with the financial accounting system running on SAP S/4HANA Cloud, and its 2026 release notes discuss the Public and Private Editions. We found no ECC option. ECC customers can export vendor and GL line items (FBL1N, FBL3N) and classify them in a separate carbon accounting tool.
05 Can I use SAP data for SB 253 reporting?
Yes. Vendor invoices for electricity, natural gas and fuel in SAP carry the spend and often the quantities needed for Scope 1 and 2, and the rest of the AP ledger is the starting point for Scope 3 from 2027. Export the reporting year, classify each line, and keep the link from each figure to its SAP document.
06 What is the best carbon accounting software for SAP users in the US?
On S/4HANA Cloud with product footprint needs, SAP Footprint Management with Green Ledger is the native choice. For a dated SB 253, CDP or customer request, especially on ECC, a tool that reads the SAP export is faster: our Compliance plan is $7,740 a year and Enterprise, for several entities with single sign-on, is $41,880.
07 What counts as a record in SAP Footprint Management pricing?
SAP defines a record as each individual data object managed via the cloud service. Active footprints count toward your entitlement and inactive ones do not, and the entitlement does not deplete with usage. Ask your SAP partner to size records against your material master and supplier count before you sign.
