Workday carbon accounting software for US Workday Financials users with a customer, CDP or SB 253 request
The short answer: Workday does not sell a carbon accounting module. What it offers is a free Commuting Emissions Survey app, a supplier sustainability capability that uses Workday Financial Management and Workday Strategic Sourcing to estimate Scope 3 from supplier spend, and partner apps on Workday Marketplace, chiefly PwC Carbon Ledger and Pulsora. For a full Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory with a date on it, most Workday Financials customers either buy one of those partner apps or export supplier invoice and expense lines and classify them in a dedicated tool, from $2,340 a year.
This guide is for the controller, finance systems lead or sustainability manager at a US company that runs its books in Workday Financials and has been asked for a carbon number by a customer, a lender, CDP or California's SB 253. It sets out what Workday itself provides, which carbon tools publicly connect to Workday, and how to choose between them on fit and published price.

Does Workday have carbon accounting software?
Not as a product you can license by that name. Workday's own material describes three pieces that touch a carbon inventory. The first is the Commuting Emissions Survey, a free app built by Workday on Workday Extend, listed on Workday Marketplace as collecting commuting and remote-work data "to help track Scope 3 emissions." The second is what Workday's 2026 Global Impact Report calls its "built-in supplier sustainability solution," which "leverages Workday Financial Management and Workday Strategic Sourcing to collect vendor environmental data and calculate Scope 3 emissions derived from supplier spend." Workday first announced that capability on April 21, 2022. The third is Workday Prism Analytics, which Workday presents with an ESG reporting use case for blending outside data with Workday data.
None of the three calculates Scope 1 and 2 from utility and fuel bills, applies a maintained factor library to every line of your ledger, or produces an SB 253 or CDP submission. That is why a Workday customer asked for a full inventory usually ends up choosing an additional tool.
Workday carbon accounting software compared
The table lists the options a Workday Financials customer can actually buy, with what each needs from Workday and the price each vendor publishes, read in October 2026. Where a vendor prints no price, the table says so.
| Option | How it connects to Workday | Published price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workday supplier sustainability capability | Native to Workday Financial Management and Workday Strategic Sourcing | Part of your Workday contract; no separate price published | A first spend-based look at supplier Scope 3 inside Workday |
| PwC Carbon Ledger | Workday Marketplace app built on Workday Extend and Prism Analytics | No price published | Companies already working with PwC that want Scope 1 to 3 inside the Workday tenant |
| Pulsora Sustainability and Carbon Management | Workday Marketplace listing; Workday's report calls it a certified integration | No price published | Teams that want a broader ESG data platform fed from Workday |
| Persefoni | Upload or entry of activity and spend data; no Workday integration page found | Pro free for one user; Advanced from $55,000 a year on AWS Marketplace | Teams with an analyst to run a dedicated climate platform |
| Watershed | Data onboarding by Watershed; no public Workday integration page found | No list price; Vendr reports a median contract of about $70,031 | Large companies that want a managed program and assurance support |
| CarbonAccounting.ai | A supplier invoice and expense report export from Workday, as CSV or XLSX | Ledger $2,340 a year, Compliance $7,740, Assurance $23,400 | A dated SB 253, CDP or customer request owned by finance |
We looked for Workday integration pages from Watershed, Persefoni, Sweep, Greenly, Novata, Normative and Emitwise and found none published. That does not mean the data cannot move, only that the route is a file or an onboarding project rather than a listed connector. Fuller price breakdowns are on carbon accounting software cost.
Is Workday's supplier spend capability enough for a carbon inventory?
It is enough for a directional view of purchased goods and services, and not enough for a report someone will check. Spend-based Scope 3 from supplier spend covers Category 1 and part of Category 2. It does not give you Scope 1 from fuel or Scope 2 from electricity, both of which SB 253 asks for first, and it does not tell a reviewer why a given invoice line received a given factor. When the request comes from a customer audit, CDP scoring or an assurance provider, the evidence per line is what gets sampled.
The practical split many Workday customers use is simple: keep supplier engagement in Workday Strategic Sourcing if you already run sourcing events there, and build the inventory itself in a tool that keeps the factor, the reason and the source line together. Our guide to spend-based Scope 3 reporting software covers when a spend-based number is accepted and when it is not.
What to export from Workday Financials for a carbon inventory
Two exports cover most of a first inventory. The first is a report of supplier invoice lines for the reporting year, with the invoice date, company, supplier, spend category, ledger account, cost center, line memo, quantity and unit where they exist, and the extended amount in US dollars. Your Workday report writer can build it once as a custom report and run it each year. Utility, natural gas and fleet fuel bills in that report are the base for Scope 1 and 2, so ask for the kWh, therms or gallons on those lines if your AP team keys them.
The second is expense report lines: airfare, lodging, car rental, mileage and rideshare, which become Scope 3 Category 6 business travel. Include the expense item and the memo, because a flight with its route in the memo can be estimated by distance rather than by dollars. Trips booked through an agency, or through an AI trip planner that books the flights, leave an itinerary with the route and cabin class, which is better evidence than an amount on a card statement. If you also run the Commuting Emissions Survey, its results cover Category 7.
Upload both files and the column mapping is detected once and reused next year. Each line then gets a GHG Protocol scope, one of the 15 Scope 3 categories, a factor, a written reason and a confidence score, and only the uncertain lines go to a reviewer.
How much does carbon accounting cost for a Workday company?
It depends far more on the route than on Workday. A partner app inside the tenant is priced by the partner, and neither PwC nor Pulsora publishes a price on its Workday Marketplace listing, so expect a quote and usually an implementation. Enterprise climate platforms sit higher: Persefoni's Advanced tier starts at $55,000 a year on AWS Marketplace, and Vendr's buyer data puts the median Watershed contract at about $70,031. For comparison, the California Air Resources Board estimated the annual cost of SB 253 Scope 1 and 2 reporting at $73,544 for one reporting entity, most of it outside help, as covered in SB 253 compliance cost.
Our plans are published and paid by card: Ledger at $2,340 a year for one entity, Compliance at $7,740 a year with activity-based factors, supplier data requests and SB 253 and CDP report packs, and Assurance at $23,400 a year for several entities, restatements and a read-only workspace for the assurance provider. Monthly billing is also available on the pricing page.
Which carbon accounting software should a Workday company buy?
If you already work with PwC, want the inventory to live inside the Workday tenant and have budget for an implementation, PwC Carbon Ledger is the most Workday-native choice. If you want a broader ESG data platform with a certified Workday connection, look at Pulsora. If the deliverable is a corporate Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory with a deadline, owned by finance and checked line by line, export the supplier invoice and expense lines and classify them: you can try that on your own data with the demo above.
Companies whose subsidiaries run other ERPs face the same decision there: see Oracle carbon accounting, SAP carbon accounting, the NetSuite guide and the Dynamics 365 guide. The full shortlist across vendors is on best carbon accounting software, and the filing itself is covered on SB 253 reporting software.
Frequently asked questions
Does Workday track carbon emissions?
Partly. Workday offers a free Commuting Emissions Survey app for commuting and remote-work emissions, and a supplier sustainability capability in Workday Financial Management and Workday Strategic Sourcing that estimates Scope 3 from supplier spend. It does not sell a full carbon accounting module, so Scope 1 and 2 and a complete Scope 3 inventory need a partner app or a separate tool.
What carbon accounting software integrates with Workday?
Workday Marketplace lists PwC Carbon Ledger, a greenhouse gas reporting platform built on Workday Extend and Prism Analytics, and Pulsora Sustainability and Carbon Management, which Workday describes as a certified integration. Deloitte's Accelerate2zero runs on Workday Adaptive Planning for emissions budgeting. Other tools, including ours, take a Workday report export as CSV or XLSX.
Can I use Workday data for SB 253 reporting?
Yes. Utility, natural gas and fuel invoices in Workday carry the spend and often the quantities needed for Scope 1 and 2, which is what the first SB 253 report due November 10, 2026 covers. Export a full reporting year of supplier invoice lines, classify them, and keep each tonne linked to its source invoice for the assurance that starts with 2027 reports.
How long does a carbon inventory from Workday data take?
With a closed year and clean supplier invoice and expense exports, a first Scope 1, 2 and spend-based Scope 3 inventory takes days in an export-based tool, most of it spent reviewing uncertain lines and collecting utility quantities. A partner app inside the Workday tenant is an implementation project, usually measured in weeks to months.
