This page is for a US controller, finance director or operations lead whose books run on Sage and who now has a carbon request with a date on it: a large customer's supplier questionnaire, a CDP response, a bank asking for emissions data, or a parent company in scope for California SB 253. You searched for Sage carbon accounting because the obvious first move is to ask whether your accounting vendor already does it. Here is what Sage sells today, where it fits, and what a US Sage shop can use instead.
Everything about Sage on this page comes from Sage's own material: the September 30, 2025 launch announcement, the Sage Earth product and enterprise pages, the Sage Earth Carbon Accounting methodology article (dated August 27, 2026), the Sage Intacct help page for the Sage Earth add-on, and Sage's February 2024 announcement with AWS. All were read in October 2026.
Does Sage have carbon accounting?
Yes. Sage sells Sage Earth Carbon Accounting, which came from Sage's 2022 purchase of the UK start-up Spherics. Since September 30, 2025 it is included "at no extra cost" for all Sage Accounting and Sage for Accountants customers in the UK. It reads spend from the accounting ledger, uses AI to categorize transactions, applies emission intensity factors and organizes the result into GHG Protocol scopes. Sage also sells a Carbon Accounting API to banks and fintechs and an enterprise version that collects data from small suppliers.
The product is aimed squarely at small businesses. Sage's own enterprise FAQ says Sage Earth "is not designed to calculate a full enterprise-level corporate footprint." Its job is to give a small supplier a credible carbon profile to hand to a bigger customer.
Is Sage Earth available in the US?
Not as a US product that we could find. The 2025 launch was announced for UK customers. The Sage Intacct help page for the Sage Earth add-on lists the United Kingdom as its only region. Sage's US website has no Sage Earth page (the US address returns a "not found" page in October 2026), and the methodology lists UK and European data sources. In February 2024 Sage said Sage Earth would reach AWS Marketplace in the UK and Ireland, "with plans to extend to North America and across Europe over the next 18 months." That window closed in August 2025, and we found no North American launch announcement since.
Plans change, so ask your Sage account manager or partner directly. For budgeting a 2026 filing or customer deadline, assume the Sage-native option is not available to a US entity.
What Sage Earth carbon accounting covers, and what it leaves out
Sage publishes its methodology, which is more than many vendors do, and it is candid about the limits. Read against a US reporting request, four of them matter.
| Question a US reviewer asks | Sage Earth Carbon Accounting | Why it matters in the US |
|---|---|---|
| Which emission factors? | UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, UK Office for National Statistics, European Environment Agency and industry factors, updated every six months | A US inventory is normally built on EPA spend factors and eGRID electricity factors; UK factors on US spend need a justification |
| Scope 2 method | Location-based only; market-based "not currently" supported | The GHG Protocol asks for both where you buy contractual instruments such as RECs, and CDP asks for both |
| Scope 3 coverage | Upstream categories 3.1 to 3.8 only; downstream use and disposal of your products not covered | Large customers and SB 253 filers expect a screening of all 15 categories, with exclusions explained |
| Who it suits | Most small and medium businesses; not CBAM, agriculture, heavy industry, or SMEs with sites in several countries | A US company with a Canadian or Mexican entity is outside the stated fit |
| Sage Intacct add-on | UK region only; an industry-average estimate from revenue and industry sector | An estimate from revenue cannot be traced to any invoice, which is what a reviewer samples |
None of this makes Sage Earth a poor product. For a UK micro business answering a tender question, a free footprint inside the books it already uses is a good deal. The limits only bite when the number has to survive someone else's review, in a US reporting context, on US factors.
How much does Sage Earth cost?
For UK Sage Accounting customers, Sage Earth Carbon Accounting is included at no extra cost. For enterprises that roll it out to their small suppliers, Sage describes the price as "hundreds per supplier, not thousands" without a list price. Sage publishes no US price because it publishes no US product. If your auditor or customer wants a US inventory, the real comparison is not Sage Earth against a paid tool. It is a paid tool against a consultant, which is where most US mid-market companies end up when their software vendor has nothing to offer.

Does Sage Intacct have carbon accounting?
In the UK, Sage Intacct customers can add a Sage Earth component that shows an industry-average footprint. Setup asks for two custom fields on each entity, the industry sector and last year's revenue, and the dashboard then estimates Scopes 1, 2 and 3 from those two numbers. That is a useful first look, but it is an estimate about companies like yours, not a calculation from your own transactions. In the US, Sage Intacct has no Sage-native carbon module that we could find, so US customers either add a third-party tool or start from an export.
The export route is simpler than it sounds. Sage Intacct, Sage 100 and Sage 50 all export vendor bill detail and general ledger detail to CSV or Excel. That file carries everything an inventory needs to start: the vendor, the GL account, the description, the date and the amount.
Sage Earth route (UK)
- 01 Connect UK Sage Accounting Spend synced from a UK ledger, or revenue and sector entered in the Intacct add-on
- 02 UK and EU factors DESNZ, ONS and EEA intensity factors applied to categorized spend
- 03 Manual modules Energy, vehicles, refrigerants, waste and travel entered by hand for accuracy
- 04 Small business footprint Scope 1, Scope 2 location-based and upstream Scope 3 categories 1 to 8
CarbonAccounting.ai route (US)
- 01 Export from Sage Vendor bill or GL detail from Sage Intacct, Sage 100 or Sage 50 as CSV or XLSX
- 02 US factors per line EPA USEEIO spend factors and eGRID electricity, with the factor recorded on each line
- 03 Review the unsure lines Every line gets a scope, one of 15 Scope 3 categories, a reason and a confidence score
- 04 Evidenced inventory Each tonne linked to its source line, ready for a customer, CDP or SB 253 review
Carbon accounting for Sage Intacct users in the US
CarbonAccounting.ai starts from the accounts payable or GL export your Sage system already produces. It proposes a GHG Protocol scope and one of the 15 Scope 3 categories for every line, gives a reason and a confidence score, and sends only the uncertain lines to a reviewer. US entities are calculated on EPA USEEIO spend factors and eGRID grid electricity factors, and the factor used is stored with each line so a reviewer can check it. Utility invoices and fuel cards land in Scope 2 and Scope 1, and the Compliance plan adds activity-based factors so kilowatt-hours and gallons replace dollars where you have them.
The point of the design is the review. When a customer, a CDP scorer or an SB 253 assurance provider picks one figure and asks where it came from, you open the line: the Sage vendor, the invoice description, the category, the factor and who approved it. That is the evidence an industry-average estimate cannot give you.
Where each option fits
Sage Earth
You keep UK books in Sage Accounting and need a footprint for a tender. It is included in your subscription, so start there.
Ledger
One US entity, a customer or bank asking for Scope 1, 2 and 3. Export from Sage, classify, review, send.
Compliance or Assurance
SB 253, a scored CDP response, several entities or an assurance provider who will sample individual lines.
Sage 100 and Sage 50 carbon accounting
Sage 100 and the US edition of Sage 50 have no built-in carbon module either. The workflow is the same as for Intacct: run the vendor purchase history or GL detail report for the reporting year, export to Excel, and upload. Distribution and light manufacturing companies, which are much of the Sage 100 base, usually find that a handful of suppliers (freight, packaging, raw materials, energy) make up most of their footprint, so the review queue is shorter than the line count suggests. The carbon accounting for manufacturing and logistics pages show what those categories look like.
Who asks a Sage customer for carbon data
- Large customers. Retailers, manufacturers and technology companies collecting supplier data for their own Scope 3, often through a CDP supply chain request or a portal. See supplier emissions reporting software.
- California SB 253. US companies with over $1 billion in revenue doing business in California report Scope 1 and 2 by November 10, 2026, with Scope 3 from 2027. Smaller Sage shops are asked for data by those filers. See SB 253 reporting software.
- Lenders and investors. Banks and private equity owners collecting portfolio emissions ask borrowers and portfolio companies for a footprint.
- Public sector bids. Some state, municipal and university tenders now ask bidders for an emissions figure or a reduction plan.
