Watershed pricing, Watershed ESG pricing and what Watershed costs a US company

Watershed does not publish a price list. It sells an annual subscription quoted after a demo, and procurement data from Vendr puts the median Watershed contract at $70,031 a year, with buyers in its sample paying from about $20,600 to $158,100. If you only need a Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory for SB 253, CDP or a customer, published plans start at $2,340 a year.

This page is for a US controller, sustainability lead or procurement manager who has a Watershed proposal on the desk, or expects one, and wants to know whether the number is normal before signing. The Watershed facts come from watershed.com (the homepage and the California compliance page), read in October 2026. Watershed's own pricing address returns a 404 and every call to action on its site is "Request a demo", so the contract figures below come from Vendr's Watershed marketplace page, which aggregates purchases made by Vendr customers. They are buyer data, not a Watershed list price, and we label them that way everywhere they appear.

We sell a competing product, so read our part of this page with that in mind. Where Watershed is worth its price, we say so. To check whether your own spend data classifies cleanly before any sales call, run the demo below on a sample of your accounts payable export.

Whether Watershed pricing makes sense depends on the job you are buying for

01 Program

A full climate program

Measurement, supplier decarbonization, clean power purchasing and reporting across many entities. This is what a Watershed contract is built and priced for.

02 Regulation

A first SB 253 filing

Scope 1 and 2 by November 10, 2026, then limited assurance and Scope 3 from 2027. Compare a quote against SB 253 reporting software priced for the filing alone.

03 Request

A customer or CDP request

One inventory, evidenced line by line, done by finance from the AP export. That is the job our published plans are built for.

How much does Watershed cost?

Watershed costs whatever its sales team quotes, because there is no public price. Vendr reports a median annual contract value of $70,031 for Watershed, with a low of $20,619 and a high of $158,138 across the purchases it tracks, and describes the wider market range for Watershed as roughly $50,000 to $250,000 or more a year depending on scope. Mid-market companies with one or two entities land toward the bottom; global groups with many subsidiaries, ERP integrations and supplier programs land at the top.

Two caveats matter when you use those numbers. First, Vendr's sample is its own customers, who skew toward venture-backed and mid-market software companies, so a large industrial group should expect to sit above the median. Second, a headline contract value often bundles advisory hours and verification support into one figure. Ask Watershed to split the quote into the recurring platform fee and everything else, then compare the recurring part.

What drives Watershed ESG pricing?

Watershed ESG pricing scales with complexity, not seats. The drivers Vendr lists for Watershed are the number of legal entities and geographies you track, the data integrations you connect (ERP, cloud providers, travel and expense systems), the depth of Scope 3 and supplier engagement, the reporting and assurance requirements you need covered, and the amount of advisory support in the contract. Those are the same levers every enterprise carbon platform uses, which is why our carbon accounting software cost guide walks through each one in detail.

The lever buyers underestimate is support. Watershed sells itself as a platform plus expertise: its California page describes a Watershed expert working with you and your auditor through SB 253 assurance. That help has value, and it is also people, which is why it moves the price more than any software feature. If your finance team can own the data, say so early and ask what the quote looks like without the advisory component.

Two ways to pay for the same Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory

Enterprise platform route (Watershed)

  1. 01 Demo and scoping Sales call, entity count and data sources scoped before any price
  2. 02 Custom quote Annual contract, median about $70,000 in Vendr buyer data
  3. 03 Integrations and advisory ERP, cloud and travel feeds connected with Watershed experts
  4. 04 Program and reports Measurement, reduction programs, clean power and disclosures

Published-price route (CarbonAccounting.ai)

  1. 01 Pick a plan $2,340, $7,740 or $23,400 a year, listed on the pricing page
  2. 02 Upload the AP export CSV or XLSX from any ERP; each line gets a scope and category
  3. 03 Review the uncertain lines Only low-confidence lines go to a person; overrides are logged
  4. 04 Evidenced inventory Every tonne linked to its invoice line for SB 253, CDP or a customer

Watershed sustainability pricing next to published carbon accounting prices

A quote is easier to judge next to prices that are actually published. The table below lists every carbon accounting vendor we could find with a public number, each read from the vendor's own pricing page (or, for Persefoni's enterprise tiers, its AWS Marketplace listing) in October 2026. Watershed sits in the enterprise band with Persefoni Advanced; the rest are priced for a single inventory or a smaller company.

Published carbon accounting prices compared with Watershed (October 2026)
Vendor and plan Published price What it is for
Watershed Not published; Vendr median $70,031 a year Enterprise measurement, reduction programs and reporting
Persefoni Advanced $55,000 a year under $250M revenue, $90,000 under $1B, $130,000 under $5B, $260,000 under $25B (AWS Marketplace, 12-month contract) Enterprise carbon and disclosure platform, unlimited users

What you get for the Watershed price

It would be lazy to call Watershed expensive and stop there. Breadth of measurement. Watershed says its library holds 2.3 million emission factors, benchmarks and methodologies, and it measures water and land use as well as carbon. Reduction, not just reporting. It helps customers buy into vetted clean power projects and decarbonize supply chains, which is a program most inventory tools do not attempt. Analyst standing. Watershed was named a leader in the 2026 Forrester Wave for Sustainability Management Software and in Verdantix Green Quadrant reports for 2025 and 2026. An assurance guarantee. For SB 253, its Guaranteed Assurance program waives the following year's fees, up to $250,000, if you do not pass assurance, provided you use its standard methodologies and its Verification Support package.

If your company is running a real reduction program across many entities, with a sustainability team to drive it, those things are what the money buys, and a $70,000 contract can be good value. Our Watershed alternatives page compares it with Persefoni, Sweep and Greenly on that basis.

When Watershed pricing is more than the job needs

Most US companies asking about Watershed pricing do not have a reduction program yet. They have a deadline. A customer wants a Scope 1, 2 and 3 number in its supplier portal, CDP sent a request, or the company has just learned it is over the $1 billion SB 253 threshold. For that job, the expensive parts of an enterprise quote (advisory hours, program tooling, many integrations) are capacity you pay for and do not use in year one.

The work that actually takes the time is classifying a year of supplier spend into the right scope and Scope 3 category and keeping the evidence behind every line. That is what we automate. You upload the accounts payable export finance already produces, each line gets a proposed scope and one of the 15 Scope 3 categories with a reason and a confidence score, and only the uncertain lines go to a reviewer. The result is an inventory where any tonne can be traced back to an invoice line, which is what an assurance provider asks for. It costs $2,340 to $23,400 a year, published, with no sales call needed to see the number.

Is Watershed worth the cost for SB 253?

Watershed is worth the cost for SB 253 when the company also wants Scope 3 reduction work, a guarantee on assurance, and expert hands on the filing. It is more than the regulation requires when the only goal is a compliant report. The first SB 253 report, due November 10, 2026, covers Scope 1 and Scope 2 only; limited assurance and Scope 3 begin with 2027 reports, so year one is the smallest part of the obligation.

Watershed's own California page says 200 companies reporting to California use it, and its guarantee is a real commercial commitment. Weigh it against the alternatives with numbers: Persefoni's done-for-you SB 253 service starts at $25,000, and our Compliance plan, built for companies in scope for SB 253, is $7,740 a year. Our SB 253 reporting software page sets out what the filing needs line by line.

How to negotiate a Watershed quote

  1. 01 Get the platform fee on its own line. Ask for the recurring subscription separated from advisory, verification support and any one-time onboarding, then compare that figure across vendors.
  2. 02 Scope the entities you must report, not the group chart. Entity count is a main driver; start with the entities in scope for SB 253, CDP or the customer request.
  3. 03 Ask for year two and year three in writing. Switching platforms after a base year is set is costly, so the renewal cap matters more than the first-year discount.
  4. 04 Bring a published price to the table. Vendr notes that buyers who arrive with competitive alternatives tend to get better terms. Persefoni's AWS Marketplace tiers and our pricing page are both public.
  5. 05 Confirm what the assurance guarantee requires. It applies to customers on standard methodologies with the Verification Support package; check the cost of that package before you count the guarantee as free.
  6. 06 Check what leaves with you. If you move later, do you get the classified transaction ledger and factor history, or only a PDF report?

01 How much does Watershed cost?
Watershed does not publish pricing. Vendr's buyer data puts the median Watershed contract at $70,031 a year, with a range of $20,619 to $158,138 in its sample, and Vendr estimates most contracts fall between about $50,000 and $250,000 or more a year depending on entities, integrations and support.
02 Does Watershed publish its pricing?
No. Watershed's pricing address returns a 404, and every call to action on watershed.com is a demo request. Pricing is quoted per customer after a scoping conversation, as an annual subscription, so any figure you see online is buyer data or an estimate rather than a list price.
03 Is there a free version of Watershed?
Watershed does not list a free plan or a self-serve trial on its website. Among enterprise carbon platforms, Persefoni offers a free single-user Pro tier. If you want to test classification on your own spend data first, our demo runs on a sample of your accounts payable export without a sales call.
04 What is Watershed Guaranteed Assurance?
It is Watershed's SB 253 commitment: a Watershed expert works with you and your auditor until you pass assurance, and if you do not pass, Watershed waives the following year's fees up to $250,000. It applies to customers using Watershed's standard methodologies and its Verification Support package.
05 Is Watershed pricing per user?
Watershed does not publish its pricing metric. Buyer data from Vendr says the price scales with organizational complexity, meaning legal entities, geographies, data integrations, Scope 3 and supplier engagement depth, reporting requirements and advisory support, rather than with seats.
06 How does Watershed pricing compare to Persefoni?
Persefoni publishes more. Its Pro tier is free for one user, its Advanced platform is listed on AWS Marketplace at $55,000 to $260,000 a year by revenue band, and its SB 253 service starts at $25,000. Watershed publishes none of its prices; Vendr buyer data puts its median near $70,000 a year.
07 What is a cheaper alternative to Watershed for SB 253 or CDP?
If you need an evidenced Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory rather than a full climate program, a ledger-based tool is far cheaper. CarbonAccounting.ai publishes Ledger at $2,340, Compliance at $7,740 and Assurance at $23,400 a year, built from the accounts payable export finance already has.
