Best carbon accounting software for SAP S/4HANA and ECC users in the US
The short answer: the best carbon accounting software for an SAP company depends on which SAP you run and how soon the number is due. On SAP S/4HANA Cloud, with product footprints to calculate for thousands of materials, SAP's own Sustainability Footprint Management plus SAP Green Ledger is the native fit. On ECC, or with an SB 253, CDP or customer date before a migration finishes, a tool that reads the vendor and GL line items you already export is faster and far cheaper. Published prices run from $2,340 a year for an export-based ledger tool to roughly $50,000 to $70,000 a year as the typical contract for the enterprise platforms.
This guide is for the controller, finance systems lead or sustainability manager at a US company on SAP who has been handed a carbon deliverable. It compares the options on the two things that actually decide the choice in an SAP shop: what each tool needs from your SAP landscape, and what it costs, using only prices the vendors publish or labeled buyer data.

Carbon accounting software for SAP compared
Prices and requirements below were read on the vendors' own pages, their AWS Marketplace listings or, where a vendor prints nothing, Vendr's published buyer data, in October 2026. The fuller price breakdowns are on carbon accounting software cost.
| Option | What it needs from SAP | Published price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAP Sustainability Footprint Management with SAP Green Ledger | A valid SAP S/4HANA Cloud license; Green Ledger runs on SAP BTP and connects to S/4HANA Cloud | Price on request; Footprint Management sold in 50,000-record blocks, minimum 150,000 records | S/4HANA Cloud manufacturers that need product footprints and carbon allocated in the ledger |
| Microsoft Sustainability Manager | A Microsoft tenant, Dataverse and Power Platform; SAP data arrives through connectors or files | US$4,000 (Essentials) or US$12,000 (Premium) per tenant per month | Companies standardized on Microsoft for analytics and identity |
| IBM Envizi | ERP and utility data loaded into Envizi's data model | From $30,000 for 12 months on AWS Marketplace, priced by data volume | Large real estate and multi-site portfolios with a sustainability team |
| Persefoni | Activity and spend data uploaded or entered | Pro free for one user; Advanced from $55,000 a year on AWS Marketplace | Teams that want a dedicated climate platform and have an analyst to run it |
| Workiva Carbon | Data linked into Workiva, usually alongside SEC reporting | No list price; Vendr reports a median Workiva contract of about $49,420 | Finance teams already filing in Workiva who want carbon in the same workflow |
| CarbonAccounting.ai | A vendor or GL line item export from ECC or any S/4HANA edition, as CSV or XLSX | Ledger $2,340 a year, Compliance $7,740, Enterprise $41,880 | A dated SB 253, CDP or customer request, especially before or during an S/4HANA move |
The SAP row is the only one that depends on your SAP release. Every other option treats SAP as a data source and works the same whether the ledger sits in ECC 6.0, S/4HANA on premise, Private Edition or Public Edition. That single fact settles most decisions before price is discussed.
Does SAP S/4HANA have carbon accounting built in?
Not in the core. SAP sells carbon accounting as add-on applications: Sustainability Footprint Management to calculate footprints and Green Ledger to post and allocate them next to financial data. SAP's own product FAQ says Green Ledger "does not include capabilities to calculate corporate or product carbon footprints," so a company needs Footprint Management, or another source of calculated emissions, for Green Ledger to have anything to book. Both require S/4HANA Cloud.
What the native route does well is real. Footprint Management ships with more than 45,000 emission factors from sources including EMBER, GLEC and EPA, calculates product footprints under PACT and the GHG Protocol, and can pull supplier footprints through SAP Ariba Sourcing. Green Ledger, generally available since January 2025, allocates carbon to cost centers and WBS elements with the same double-entry discipline as the financial ledger. IDC placed SAP among the Leaders in its 2026 carbon accounting MarketScape. If you need product carbon footprints for CBAM or a Catena-X customer and you are already on S/4HANA Cloud, that is hard to beat. Our SAP carbon accounting page sets out SAP's pricing terms and prerequisites in detail.
Which carbon accounting software works with SAP ECC?
Any tool that accepts a file. ECC has no SAP-native carbon module, so ECC customers export and load. The standard reports are enough: FBL1N for vendor line items, FBL3N for GL line items and ME2N for purchase orders with quantities and units. Run them for the reporting year, export to a spreadsheet and you have the vendor, the GL account, the document text, the date, the amount and often the quantity, which is everything an emissions inventory starts from.
Two cleanup steps save a lot of review time. Remove reversed and reversal documents so a cancelled invoice is not counted twice, and exclude intercompany postings that would double count spend between your own company codes. If the export total does not tie to the trial balance for the same accounts, find out why before classifying anything; on large ledgers that usually means duplicate vendor invoices or payments posted against the wrong document, the kind of gap that matching invoices against payments catches quickly.
How much does carbon accounting software cost for an SAP company?
It ranges from about $2,300 a year to well over $100,000. The SAP-native route has no public price: you pay for Footprint Management in record blocks, Green Ledger, the S/4HANA Cloud license it depends on, and a partner to configure factor mapping and allocations. Among the platforms that publish numbers, Microsoft Sustainability Manager lists at $48,000 to $144,000 a year per tenant, IBM Envizi starts at $30,000 on AWS, and Persefoni Advanced starts at $55,000. Vendr's buyer data puts the median Watershed contract near $70,000.
The comparison that matters for a first filing is against outside help. The California Air Resources Board estimates SB 253 Scope 1 and 2 reporting at $73,544 a year for one entity, mostly consultants; the breakdown is on SB 253 compliance cost. Per-vendor detail is on Microsoft Sustainability Manager pricing, IBM Envizi pricing and Watershed pricing.
What an SAP export looks like after classification
A worked example makes the difference between the routes concrete. Take a mid-size US manufacturer on ECC with about 60,000 vendor line items a year. After removing reversals and intercompany lines, roughly 52,000 remain. In an export-based tool each line receives a GHG Protocol scope, one of the 15 Scope 3 categories, a reason and a confidence score. Electricity invoices from the utility land in Scope 2, natural gas and diesel in Scope 1, freight in category 4, purchased steel and packaging in category 1, and the leased forklifts in category 8.
The reviewer does not read 52,000 lines. They read the uncertain ones, a small share of the total driven by vague document texts such as "services" or "misc," and those are where a controller's knowledge of the vendor base matters most. Every approved line keeps its SAP document number, so when an assurance provider samples a category 1 figure, you can show the invoice, the factor and the approval. That traceability is the same promise Green Ledger makes, delivered from an export in days rather than at the end of a platform project.
Is SAP Green Ledger worth it for SB 253?
Only if you are already on S/4HANA Cloud and buying Footprint Management for other reasons. SB 253's first report, due November 10, 2026, covers Scope 1 and Scope 2 only, and CARB accepts an existing report, data filed with another program, its draft template, or a statement of non-reporting. Scope 3 follows in 2027. Those first numbers come mostly from utility and fuel invoices, which a ledger export already holds. Buying a ledger for carbon postings to meet that date is a large project for a small first filing. The SB 253 reporting software page covers what CARB's intake platform asks for.
How to choose
Start with your SAP release and your deadline, then let price break the tie. If you are on S/4HANA Cloud and need product footprints, talk to your SAP partner about Footprint Management and get the record count sized against your material master before signing. If you are on Microsoft for analytics and identity, compare Microsoft Sustainability Manager on its published tenant price. If the deliverable is a corporate inventory with a date on it, especially from ECC, export the line items and classify them; you can try that on your own data with the demo above, and our plans are published. For a broader shortlist across ERPs, see best carbon accounting software, and if your group also runs Dynamics 365 in some subsidiaries, the Dynamics 365 guide covers that side.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best carbon accounting software for SAP?
On SAP S/4HANA Cloud with product footprint needs, SAP Sustainability Footprint Management with SAP Green Ledger is the native choice. For a corporate Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory with a deadline, or on SAP ECC, a tool that reads SAP vendor and GL line item exports is faster to deploy and costs from $2,340 a year.
Can SAP Green Ledger calculate Scope 3 emissions?
No. SAP states that Green Ledger does not include capabilities to calculate corporate or product carbon footprints. It records and allocates emissions calculated elsewhere, usually in SAP Sustainability Footprint Management, which analyzes Scope 1, 2 and 3 from ERP and supplier data.
Do I need S/4HANA for SAP carbon accounting?
For SAP's own products, yes. SAP lists a valid SAP S/4HANA Cloud license as the prerequisite for Sustainability Footprint Management, and Green Ledger integrates with S/4HANA Cloud. Companies on ECC use a third-party tool that imports SAP exports, at least until their migration is complete.
How long does a carbon inventory from SAP data take?
With a closed year and clean vendor and GL exports, a first Scope 1, 2 and spend-based Scope 3 inventory takes days in an export-based tool, most of it spent reviewing uncertain lines and collecting utility quantities. An SAP-native implementation is a partner project measured in months, because factors and allocation models must be configured first.
