Epicor carbon cost rollup and carbon accounting software for US Kinetic and Prophet 21 manufacturers

The short answer: Epicor's carbon feature is Carbon Cost Rollup in Epicor Kinetic. It works like a standard cost rollup, starting at the bill of materials and operations and adding up a carbon cost per part, so it tells you the footprint of a product you make. It does not build a company-wide Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory from utility bills, fuel, freight, services and travel. For a customer questionnaire, CDP or an SB 253 request, most Epicor manufacturers export AP invoice lines and classify them in a dedicated carbon accounting tool, from $2,340 a year.

This guide is for the controller, cost accountant or operations lead at a US manufacturer or distributor on Epicor Kinetic or Prophet 21 who has been asked for a carbon number and wants to know what Epicor already does, what it leaves out, and what to buy for the gap.

What is Epicor Carbon Cost Rollup?

Carbon Cost Rollup is a patent-pending feature inside Epicor Kinetic that treats carbon dioxide equivalent the way a standard cost system treats dollars. Epicor's May 6, 2025 announcement describes it starting "at the most fundamental level of the bill of materials and operations, calculating the carbon cost for each component," and adding the totals up each tier until the finished part carries its cumulative carbon. Epicor partner 2W Tech reports that the feature first shipped in Kinetic 2024.2, generally available November 14, 2024, as "the initial phase of the CO2e Sustainability Initiative," with later phases planned to extend it to jobs, quotes and the general ledger.

It sits next to two other pieces. In June 2024 Epicor announced a collaboration with Climatiq to bring Climatiq's carbon footprint calculation API across the Epicor portfolio, with full implementation expected in 2025. And Epicor Quick Ship shows estimated CO2e alongside cost when you compare shipping rates. Epicor publishes no separate price for any of these.

The useful way to read Epicor's features is by the question each one answers. A product footprint answers "how much carbon is in this part," which is what an automotive or industrial customer asks when it wants emissions per unit. A corporate inventory answers "how much did the company emit last year, by scope," which is what CDP, a lender, SB 253 and most supplier questionnaires ask first.

Why a part-level rollup is not a corporate inventory

A bill of materials only knows what goes into a part. A corporate inventory under the GHG Protocol also needs the natural gas for the paint line, the electricity for the whole plant, diesel for owned trucks, refrigerant leaks, inbound and outbound freight, the IT and professional services you buy, business travel, and capital equipment. Most of that never appears on a BOM. It does appear in Accounts Payable, because every one of those things arrived with an invoice.

The rollup also inherits the hard part rather than solving it: someone still has to decide the carbon cost of each purchased material and operation. For a job shop buying bar stock, castings and fasteners from dozens of suppliers, that is the same factor-assignment problem a corporate inventory has, just done part by part. If your customer wants per-part numbers and you have engineering time to maintain the carbon costs, the rollup is a good fit. If they want last year's Scope 1, 2 and 3 by a date, it is the wrong starting point.

How to get an Epicor carbon inventory from Accounts Payable

Everything a first inventory needs is already in Epicor. In Kinetic, a Business Activity Query over the AP invoice header and detail tables (APInvHed and APInvDtl), joined to the vendor and the G/L account, gives one row per invoice line. Filter it to the reporting year and export it to Excel. Keep the vendor name, line description, part number if there is one, G/L account, quantity, unit of measure and amount. Prophet 21 users can do the same from the voucher and AP reports their partner already runs. If an older Epicor 10 report hands you a legacy .xls file, convert the spreadsheet to XLSX or CSV first so every column survives.

That file goes into carbon accounting software that reads it line by line. Ours proposes a GHG Protocol scope and one of the 15 Scope 3 categories for every line, stores the factor on the line (EPA USEEIO spend factors for purchases, eGRID for electricity), writes the reason and a confidence score, and sends only the unsure lines to a reviewer. Utility and fuel invoices with quantities become activity-based Scope 1 and 2. Every tonne stays linked to the AP line that produced it, which is what an auditor or a customer's supplier team asks for. The product-level question can then come later, with the inventory telling you which purchased materials matter enough to model.

How much does carbon accounting cost for an Epicor manufacturer?

Epicor does not list a price for its carbon features, so ask your account manager whether Carbon Cost Rollup and the Climatiq calculations are included in your Kinetic subscription and what release you need. Outside Epicor, the range is wide. Enterprise platforms are quoted: Persefoni's Advanced tier starts at $55,000 a year on AWS Marketplace, and Vendr's buyer data puts the Watershed median around $70,031. CARB estimates that one company's annual SB 253 Scope 1 and 2 reporting costs $73,544, mostly in outside help (the breakdown is in SB 253 compliance cost).

For a mid-size Epicor manufacturer answering customers and CDP, our Compliance plan at $7,740 a year covers activity-based factors, supplier data requests and report packs, and Ledger at $2,340 covers one entity's Scope 1, 2 and spend-based Scope 3. Groups with several Epicor companies and an assurance provider ahead use Assurance at $23,400. All three are on the pricing page.

Which carbon accounting software should an Epicor company buy?

Pick by the question you were asked. If a customer wants emissions per part and you have cost accounting time to maintain carbon costs on materials and operations, start with Carbon Cost Rollup in Kinetic. If you were asked for a company footprint by scope, which covers almost every first request, start from the AP export, because it reaches the energy, freight and services a BOM never sees. Manufacturers that sell into large customers usually end up needing both, in that order. The same decision for other ERPs is covered on Business Central carbon accounting, Sage carbon accounting and the NetSuite carbon accounting guide, and the industry view is on carbon accounting for manufacturing. Suppliers answering a customer request should also read supplier emissions software.

Frequently asked questions

Does Epicor have carbon accounting software?

Epicor offers carbon features rather than a full carbon accounting product. Epicor Kinetic includes Carbon Cost Rollup, which calculates carbon per part from the bill of materials and operations, Epicor works with Climatiq for carbon calculations, and Epicor Quick Ship estimates shipment CO2e. A complete Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory usually needs a separate tool fed from Epicor data.

When was Epicor Carbon Cost Rollup released?

Epicor partner 2W Tech reports it arrived in Epicor Kinetic 2024.2, generally available November 14, 2024, as the first phase of Epicor's CO2e Sustainability Initiative. Epicor formally announced it as a patent-pending environmental solution at Epicor Insights in Las Vegas on May 6, 2025.

Can I use Epicor data for SB 253 or CDP reporting?

Yes. Utility, natural gas and fuel invoices in Epicor AP carry the spend and often the quantities for Scope 1 and 2, which the first SB 253 report due November 10, 2026 covers, and the full AP ledger is the starting point for Scope 3. Export a closed year of invoice lines, classify them, and keep each tonne linked to its source line.

How long does a carbon inventory from Epicor data take?

With a closed year and a clean AP export, a first Scope 1, 2 and spend-based Scope 3 inventory takes days in an export-based tool, mostly spent reviewing flagged lines and collecting utility quantities. Product-level carbon through a cost rollup takes longer, because every purchased material and operation needs a carbon cost before the totals mean anything.
