Greenplaces alternatives compared on Greenplaces software, Greenplaces pricing and the self-serve option for US carbon accounting

Greenplaces is a Raleigh, North Carolina company that sells managed sustainability and compliance work to mid-market firms: a team of named experts builds your Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory, your EcoVadis and CDP responses and your SB 253 filing on its own platform, and it also sells SOC 2 and AI governance work. It does not publish a price. If you want someone else to do the work, it is a credible choice. If you only need a defensible carbon inventory and would rather run it yourself from the accounts payable export you already have, CarbonAccounting.ai publishes its plans, starting at $390 a month.

Everything about Greenplaces on this page comes from greenplaces.com: the homepage, the about page and the carbon accounting and SB 253 service pages, read in September 2026. Where Greenplaces is stronger than we are, we say so. The comparison that matters is not software against software. Greenplaces sells an outcome delivered by people; we sell a tool your team runs. Try ours on a few of your own invoice lines below before you read on. It takes about ten minutes and there is no sales call.

What is Greenplaces?

Greenplaces describes itself as "managed compliance for mid-market." The company launched in 2021, is a certified B Corporation, and its footer lists a SOC 2 Type II report and an EcoVadis rating of its own. Its founder story explains the model: a mid-size business drowning in customer questionnaires wanted one partner at a flat, predictable rate instead of a string of consultants billing by the hour.

Today the offer has three pillars. Sustainability covers carbon footprints, EcoVadis ratings, CDP submissions, SBTi targets and California SB 253 and SB 261. Trust covers SOC 2 readiness, ISO 27001 and security questionnaires. AI governance covers use-case inventories, policies and alignment with the EU AI Act and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. The about page says it supports more than 40 compliance requirements, and it sells into construction, law firms, financial services, software, healthcare, professional services and manufacturing.

Is Greenplaces software or a consultancy?

Both, with the weight on the service. Greenplaces calls itself "the modern alternative to building that capability yourself: better than hiring internally, easier than managing consultants, and more credible than self-serve software." Its carbon accounting page describes the work in three steps: the platform pulls data from your finance system, HRIS, utility providers, travel platform and supplier records; its experts select emission factors, set boundaries and document allocation methods; and the same inventory is then deployed to CDP, EcoVadis, SBTi and SB 253.

That matters for the buying decision. You are not licensing a tool you will learn; you are hiring a team that uses a tool on your behalf. The dashboard, in Greenplaces' words, "lets you see the work without doing it." Some buyers want exactly that. Others want to own the number, keep the method in house and pay for software rather than for hours, and those are the buyers who end up comparing Greenplaces alternatives.

How much does Greenplaces cost?

Greenplaces does not publish pricing. When we checked in September 2026 there was no pricing page (greenplaces.com/pricing returned a 404), and every call to action on the site is "Book a strategy call." The about page describes the model as "a flat, predictable rate" and the homepage positions it as "a fraction of the cost of traditional consulting," but no figure appears anywhere on the site. Anything you read quoting a Greenplaces price is a third-party estimate, so ask for a written quote that separates each framework you need.

What Greenplaces does better than self-serve carbon accounting software

A fair comparison starts with where the other side wins, and Greenplaces wins in real places.

Someone else does the work. If nobody on your team has the hours, a managed service is the honest answer, and no software, ours included, removes the need for a person to own boundary and method decisions. One vendor for several asks at once. A mid-market company that faces an EcoVadis request, a SOC 2 requirement and an AI policy questionnaire in the same RFP can buy all three from Greenplaces. We only do carbon. EcoVadis depth. Greenplaces publishes buyer mandates and EcoVadis minimum scores for large customers and builds the carbon data straight into the Environment theme. Utility data connections. Its carbon page says you can connect utility accounts directly with your credentials, with broad US coverage.

When Greenplaces is the better choice

Choose Greenplaces if you have no sustainability staff and no appetite to build the skill in house, if your trigger is a customer mandate that bundles EcoVadis, CDP and SOC 2 together, or if leadership wants a named expert whose signature sits behind every deliverable. It also fits a company that would rather buy a finished SB 253 filing than a system, and is comfortable that the method lives with the vendor.

When a self-serve Greenplaces alternative fits better

The balance changes when the carbon inventory is the whole job and your finance team can run it. For most US companies outside heavy industry, the largest part of the footprint is purchased goods and services, and that lives in accounts payable as vendor names, GL codes and dollar amounts. CarbonAccounting.ai reads that export, proposes a scope and one of the 15 Scope 3 categories for every line with a reason and a confidence level, sends only the uncertain lines to a reviewer, and keeps the link from every tonne back to the invoice behind it. You own the method, the evidence and the file, and next year's inventory is a re-run rather than a new engagement.

It also fits a buyer who needs a number to budget against. Our plans are on the pricing page, and the cost of a first year is known before anyone books a call. For a smaller company with a single customer request, the simple carbon accounting software page walks through the lightest setup.

Questions to ask Greenplaces before you sign or renew

  1. 01 What is the annual fee for carbon accounting alone, and how does it change if we add EcoVadis, CDP or SB 253?
  2. 02 Which deliverables are fixed in the flat rate, and what triggers extra charges, such as a restatement, a new entity or an acquisition?
  3. 03 Can we export the full inventory with activity data, emission factors, factor sources and calculation steps in a format we can use without Greenplaces?
  4. 04 If we leave after year one, who keeps the method documentation our assurance provider will ask for in year two?
  5. 05 How is each Scope 3 purchase assigned to a category, and can our controller see the reason line by line?
  6. 06 Who is our named expert, and what happens to our account if that person leaves?

Greenplaces alternatives worth comparing

If the managed model is what you liked, compare it with a traditional firm; our page on carbon accounting services sets out what firms deliver and the only public cost benchmark. If you want an enterprise platform with a sales-led rollout, look at Persefoni alternatives and Watershed alternatives. If you liked the idea of software with optional expert help at a small-company price, compare Aclymate alternatives. If EcoVadis is the trigger, see EcoVadis carbon management software. If you want the full field in one table, start with best carbon accounting software. And if SB 253 is the date on the calendar, the SB 253 reporting software page covers what the first filing needs.

01 What is Greenplaces?
Greenplaces is a Raleigh, North Carolina company, launched in 2021 and certified as a B Corporation, that sells managed compliance to mid-market firms. Its experts use its own platform to build carbon inventories and handle EcoVadis, CDP, SBTi and California SB 253 and SB 261 work, and it also sells SOC 2, ISO 27001 and AI governance programs.
02 How much does Greenplaces cost?
Greenplaces does not publish its prices. There is no pricing page on its site, and every path leads to a strategy call. Its about page describes a flat, predictable rate and positions the service as cheaper than traditional consulting, but gives no figure. Ask for a written quote that separates each framework you need.
03 Is Greenplaces carbon accounting software?
Partly. Greenplaces runs a platform that connects finance, HR, utility, travel and supplier data, but it sells the platform together with its experts, who select the factors, set the boundary and produce the deliverables. It describes itself as an alternative to self-serve software rather than as software you operate yourself.
04 Does Greenplaces support California SB 253?
Yes. Greenplaces offers an SB 253 and SB 261 service that builds the inventory, prepares the disclosure documents, coordinates third-party assurance where required and files. Its SB 253 page states that the first Scope 1 and 2 disclosures are due November 10, 2026.
05 What are the best Greenplaces alternatives?
It depends on why Greenplaces was on your list. For another done-for-you option, compare carbon accounting firms. For enterprise platforms, compare Persefoni and Watershed. If you want to run the inventory yourself from accounts payable data at a published price, CarbonAccounting.ai starts at $390 a month and can be tested on your own data first.
06 Is there a cheaper alternative to Greenplaces for carbon accounting?
Greenplaces publishes no price, so a direct comparison is not possible. What we can say is that a self-serve tool moves the cost from vendor hours to your own team's time. CarbonAccounting.ai costs $390 a month for one entity, or $1,290 a month for the plan built for SB 253, CSRD and CBAM filers.
07 Can I switch from Greenplaces to carbon accounting software?
Yes, if you get the underlying data out first. Before your renewal, request the activity data, emission factors, factor sources and calculation workbook behind each reported year. With those, a software tool can reproduce the prior-year number and keep your base year consistent, which your assurance provider will check.
