Market guide for carbon accounting software and the vendors Gartner, Verdantix and Forrester actually name

The short answer: Gartner's Market Guide for Carbon Accounting and Management Software has two editions, published January 17, 2024 and October 27, 2025, and both sit behind a Gartner subscription. Its list of Representative Vendors is not public. Only a handful of vendors have announced their own inclusion: carbmee, Climatiq and Carbonstop for 2024, Context Labs for 2025. For a named shortlist, the two public analyst rankings are more useful: the Verdantix Green Quadrant for enterprise carbon management (March 2026, eight Leaders) and the Forrester Wave for sustainability management software (Q3 2026).

This guide is for a US controller, procurement manager or sustainability lead who was told to "check what Gartner says" before buying carbon accounting software, and found a paywall. It sets out what the market guide does and does not tell you, which vendors are publicly confirmed in each analyst report, and how to turn that into a priced shortlist for an SB 253, CDP or customer deadline.

What the Gartner market guide for carbon accounting software says

A Gartner Market Guide is not a ranking. Unlike a Magic Quadrant, it does not score vendors or place them in a grid. It defines a market, describes what buyers should expect from it, and names a sample of "Representative Vendors" without endorsing any of them. Gartner defines this market as applications that facilitate the measurement, management, reduction and reporting of enterprise emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol.

The free abstract of the 2024 edition (document 5113231) carries four findings worth reading before any vendor demo. The market is "fragmented and immature, creating uncertainty and risk for buyers". Providers range "from pure-play startups with viability risk, to enterprise software and vendors from adjacent markets". "No vendor provides a complete solution." And the ESG software and carbon accounting markets "are diverging instead of converging", which is Gartner's way of saying that an ESG reporting suite and a carbon ledger are increasingly different purchases.

The 2025 edition (document 7108330) keeps the same definition and, according to passages a listed vendor has quoted, points to "persistent gaps in the availability and quality of the underlying source data" and notes that the adoption of generative and other AI inside these tools "has been increasing rapidly". Both points matter more to a buyer than any vendor name, because they describe where the work actually is: getting reliable source data in, and checking what the AI did with it.

Which vendors are in the Gartner market guide?

Only the vendors that announced it themselves can be named with a source. Gartner's list is in the paid report, and many listed vendors never publish a press release. This is everything we could verify in October 2026.

VendorEditionSource of the claimWhat it sells
carbmee2024Press release, February 15, 2024, "Representative Vendor"Enterprise carbon management focused on supply chains, Berlin
Climatiq2024Company post, January 2024, "recognized in the Gartner Market Guide"Emission factor API for developers, not a full accounting tool

Notice who is missing. None of the names most US buyers already have on a shortlist (Persefoni, Watershed, Sweep, Greenly, IBM Envizi, Microsoft, Salesforce, Workiva) has published an announcement for this guide. That does not mean they are absent, only that you cannot confirm it without a Gartner seat. Do not put "Gartner recommended" in a procurement memo on the strength of a vendor slide. Ask the vendor for the document number and the edition date, and check it against 5113231 or 7108330.

Analyst rankings that do name carbon accounting vendors

If you need named vendors with an evaluation behind them, two reports publish their Leaders, and the vendors confirm the placements on their own sites.

The Verdantix list is the most useful public one, and it tilts heavily toward enterprise and EHS suites. Other assessed vendors include Benchmark Gensuite, carbmee, Greenly, Normative, osapiens, Persefoni, Position Green, Salesforce, SAP and Workiva. If your company is a mid-market manufacturer, distributor or services firm with one sustainability deadline and no sustainability team, most of the Leaders are sized for a different buyer. That is not a criticism of the reports; it is what they evaluate.

How to turn the market guide into a carbon accounting software shortlist

Analyst reports tell you who is credible. They do not tell you what you will pay or how long it takes to get a filing-ready number. Four filters do that, in this order.

  1. Start from the obligation, not the vendor. California SB 253 asks companies over $1 billion in revenue doing business in the state for Scope 1 and 2 by November 10, 2026, with Scope 3 from 2027. A CDP response or a customer questionnaire needs a full inventory with a method note. An EPA GHGRP filing needs facility data in e-GGRT. Each points to a different size of tool, compared on best carbon accounting software.
  2. Price it before the demo. Most of the analyst-named vendors sell on annual quotes. The published figures we could source (Persefoni's AWS tiers from $55,000, Watershed's median contract near $70,000 in buyer data, IBM Envizi from $30,000, Microsoft's per-license price) are collected on carbon accounting software cost, with a page per vendor.
  3. Check where the data comes from. Gartner's own warning is source data quality. A tool that builds the inventory from the accounts payable export you already have avoids months of connector work for a first filing.
  4. Test the AI on your own lines. Gartner notes AI is spreading fast through these tools. Ask whether the model only classifies or also calculates totals, and whether each line carries a confidence level. What to look for is set out on AI carbon accounting software.

Read the peer reviews too, but read them for the same signals: implementation time, whether the vendor helped at audit, and renewal increases. A general business software reviews site is a reasonable place to compare how buyers describe onboarding across the vendors on your list.

Where CarbonAccounting.ai fits

We are not named in any of these reports, and we will not pretend otherwise. We are built for the buyer the enterprise rankings do not cover: a US company that needs an evidenced Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory from its own invoices, at a published price. You upload the AP export from QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite or any ERP. Each line gets a GHG Protocol scope, a Scope 3 category, an emission factor and a confidence level. You review the uncertain lines, and every tonne links back to its invoice line for an auditor.

Ledger costs $2,340 a year, Compliance $7,740 and Assurance $23,400, all on the pricing page. That sits well below the published entry prices of the analyst-named platforms, and the demo above runs the real classifier on your own lines before any card step.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Gartner Magic Quadrant for carbon accounting software?

No. Gartner covers carbon accounting with a Market Guide, which describes the market and lists Representative Vendors without ranking them. The closest published rankings are the Verdantix Green Quadrant for enterprise carbon management software (2026) and the Forrester Wave for sustainability management software (Q3 2026).

When was the latest Gartner market guide for carbon accounting software published?

The latest edition is dated October 27, 2025, document 7108330. The first was published January 17, 2024, document 5113231. We found no 2026 edition as of October 2026. Both editions require a Gartner subscription to read in full.

Who are the leaders in carbon accounting software?

In the 2026 Verdantix Green Quadrant for enterprise carbon management, the eight Leaders are Cority, IBM, Schneider Electric, Sphera, Sweep, UL Solutions, Watershed and Wolters Kluwer. In the Forrester Wave for sustainability management software, Q3 2026, Watershed and Workiva confirm Leader placements.

Does being in the Gartner market guide mean a vendor is recommended?

No. Gartner states that it does not endorse any vendor in its research. A Representative Vendor is an example of a provider in the market, chosen to illustrate it. Use the guide to understand risks such as vendor viability and data quality, then judge vendors on price, data model and evidence.

What is the cheapest analyst-recognized carbon accounting software?

Among the Verdantix-assessed vendors with published prices, Persefoni's free single-user Pro tier is the lowest entry point, with reports sold as add-ons and its Advanced tier from $55,000 a year. Most Verdantix Leaders sell on quotes. Published vendor prices are compared on our carbon accounting software cost page.
